An Heirloom of Love: A Mother’s Day Reflection

Mother’s Day has always carried a deep meaning for me. It is not simply a date on the calendar, but a quiet moment to reflect on the women who shape us, guide us, and leave a lasting imprint on who we become.

For me, Mother’s Day this year is particularly significant as it is the first without my grandmother, Elaine, known to all of us as GG.

Elaine was mother to seven children and yet still managed to find time to be a mother figure to many of her children’s friends as well. She was always available for late night advice over mugs of hot chocolate, and was a perfect combination of strength and gentleness. 

Her recent passing has left a space that cannot be filled, but her presence remains. Mother’s Day is now a moment to pause and reflect on the quiet inheritances that matter most.  

My mother, Charmaine, has a much shyer nature than myself and her own mother, although she is equally unwavering in her support of our family.

My mum is the kind of mother who quietly gives endlessly, often without thanks or asking for anything in return. Growing up, I did not always see the full extent of what she carried for our family, but I see it now with clarity. It is only when you become a parent yourself that you truly understand the depth of that love. Her influence has shaped not only who I am as a person, but also how I approach my work, my relationships, and my purpose. 

I am incredibly grateful to have my mum in my life and I genuinely don’t know what we would do without her. 

And then there are my own children, Amielle and Jayden.

Having children was unfortunately not something that came easily for Paul and I. Both our children were yearned for and long awaited, even though they came to us in very different ways; Ami through IVF and Jayden through adoption. 

They are my constant reminder of what truly matters. Through them, I have come to understand motherhood in a way that is both grounding and transformative. It is not always perfect, and it is rarely easy, but it is the most meaningful role I will ever have. They are the reason I strive to create something lasting, something that holds meaning beyond the present moment.

This is, in many ways, what Guéniat Gold Gallery represents.

Each piece is created with the understanding that jewellery is never just jewellery. It becomes part of someone’s story. It marks moments, celebrates milestones, and carries emotion in a way few other things can. Whether it is a gift from a child to a mother, a partner to the woman who holds their family together, or even a personal piece chosen to honour one’s own journey, it holds significance far beyond its form.

Mother’s Day offers a rare opportunity to pause and acknowledge that.
